Visualizing Live Gas Balloon Competition Gordon Benett 2017

Florian Evéquoz
Project status:

The FAI Gordon Bennett race is the oldest air competition in the world. Each year, gas balloons compete to cover the largest distance. In 2017, this competition will be organized in Fribourg ( The goal of this bachelor project is to develop a web dashboard to visualize the progress of competitors during the race, as well as other available tracking data (e.g. speed, altitude, etc.) and possibly contextual data, e.g. Twitter or Instagram feeds of competitors. If well realized, this dashboard will be integrated into the official website and used by the organizers to provide a public access to live tracking data during the competition.

A specific challenge of the project will be the design of the visualizations and proper use of technological visualization frameworks such as D3, Vega, etc.

This project is realized in close collaboration with the organizers of the competition and HES-SO. Access to real data will be provided. As the Gordon Bennett competition is well covered by international media, the outcome of this project might receive high attention.
