Tommaso received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Visual Communication from the Politecnico di Milano. He spent several years in the commercial environment working on projects at the international level, such as leading the art direction for the Louis Vuitton's Cup Party in 2007. In 2011, Tommaso joined Fabrica at the research centre for visual communication for the Benetton group. During this time, he worked on a design research project for interactive experiences. His research focused on generating content and concepts for large-scale LCD installations placed inside Benetton flagship stores worldwide. In 2014, he moved to EPFL+ECAL lab to explore design for innovative technologies and how these tools can offer designers with new areas of creativity. His expertise covers different fields of design: experience design, visual design and interaction design. Tommaso believes that experimentation, research and continuing studies in your interests (and things that make you happy) are the best way to achieve constant growth as both a designer and person.
Course "Cross-media and Visual Design"

Every day we use different types of media to work, learn, study, relax and more. Newspapers, magazines, posters, screens, smartphones, tablets, computers, TVs, video games, films.
What do these media have in common?
This lecture will present an exploration of visual content and visual design in a theoretical and concrete way with practical examples. We will see how visual design changes depending on the medium, analysing the particularities of each of them and the methods used to design and produce visual content for them. This will show the complexity of the variety of trades and activities related to the world of visual communication. We will also introduce the concept of visual identity, the declination of individual content on different types of media. Students will be provided with theoretical and practical information and important references within each of the media sectors we address.
The primary purpose of the reading is to give the student a basic understanding of the methods and tools for producing content on different types of media. Secondly, it will be a concrete inspiration for students newly immersed in the field of media design.
In the final part of the lecture, we will work on an exercise on visual language and on the initial inspiration method of each project, the research.
