Julie Marques discusses counter-discourses and algorithmic governance at ACFAS 2025
The ACFAS 2025 Congress featured a panel titled Discourses and Controversies on AI and Platforms, held in Montreal in May, as part of the broader session “Platforms, Generative AI and Algorithmic Regulation: Critical and Interdisciplinary Perspectives” The session brought together researchers to explore how recent developments in generative AI reshape power dynamics, infrastructures, and epistemologies.
Julie Marques, postdoctoral researcher at the Human-IST Institute, presented her contribution “The Orthopedic Temptation of AI Counter-Discourses: Mapping, Paradoxes and Alternative Pathways”. The presentation explored how critical discourses, although intended to resist dominant narratives, are often absorbed by normalization logics that reinforce algorithmic governmentality.
The session contributed to ongoing interdisciplinary debates on how to critically engage with the political, social, and ethical stakes of AI and platform governance.
