In this lecture, Prof Venturini will examine how online (sub)cultures and internet memes can be understood and studied as forms of digital folklore. His talk will introduce his theory of «memesis» and illustrate it through an emerging form of conspiratorial folklore that, following QAnon, is spreading from the fringes into the mainstream of digital media. This conspiratorial complex draws on distrust of globalization and modernisation and translates this broad defiance of political and scientific institutions onto online platforms, culminating in the emergence of the «super-conspiracy». He will discuss how these are propagated through a constellation of hypertexts (which energize conspiracy theories), feeds (which sustain conspiracy influencers), and memes (which relay conspiracy storytelling).
