NZZ Expert Commentary: Chatbots, Mental Health, and Hidden Risks


More and more people are turning to chatbots for support with psychological challenges. In an expert commentary for NZZ am Sonntag, Dr. Marisa Tschopp highlights both the potential and the risks of this development. Her research explores the evolving relationship between humans and AI, a perceptual shift from digital assistants that simply make tasks easier, to companions or even friends. While these technologies can provide comfort and connection, they also pose risks. People may develop dependencies and, in some cases, drift into social isolation. Dr. Tschopp is senior researcher in Prof. Dr. Jobin's group, working on the SNSF-funded project "Performing Artificial Intelligence: Governance, Agency, Action–An Interdisciplinary Inquiry".
