Official start of the SNSF-funded project 'Performing AI'

The research project Performing Artificial Intelligence: Governance, Agency, Action has officially started at the Human-IST Institute of the University of Fribourg. Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), this four-year international collaboration explores artificial intelligence as a cultural phenomenon. The project also involves researchers from the University of Lausanne, Zurich University of the Arts, and the University of Tokyo.

To support this interdisciplinary endeavor, several new team members are joining Human-IST.

Julie Marques: Drawing on intersectionality, decolonial studies, and gender studies, she critically examines how gender, race, and class relations materialize in the context of AI and its globalization.

Jascha Bareis:  With expertise in political theory, technology assessment and science and technology studies, they investigate AI governance processes, generative AI and LLMs, as well as the field of hype.

Marisa Tschopp: With a background in psychology, she focuses on human-AI relationships, trust in AI, and ethical implications. In addition, she remains a researcher at Scip AG.

Karim Aebischer: A junior researcher with a foundation in computer science, he contributes to the project with his technical skills in addition to his appointment at the University of Teacher Education Fribourg.

The Human-IST team is led by Principal Investigator Dr. Anna Jobin and supported by secretary Esther Mauron. Together, the team aims to advance critical perspectives on AI's societal impact through innovative interdisciplinary research.
