At a recent event hosted by the University of Fribourg, a team from the Human-Ist Institute engaged with students on the topic of well-being and digital technologies. Marisa Tschopp together with Simon Ruffieux and a Bachelor student, we talked with visitors about synthetic relationships, including insights from studies on systems such as Replika and Character.AI’s psychologist. At our booth, participants were able to explore the narrative mental health app Betwixt: The Story of You, which we have been investigating in several research projects, and learn about an interactive journaling prototype developed by Simon’s student. The event created space for meaningful conversations about both the promises and the challenges of using digital tools to support mental well-being. We thank Rachel Gerber and her team for organising this thoughtful and enriching initiative.
