Hype Studies
Hype Studies is an emergent, transdisciplinary research arena that investigates hype as a powerful and pervasive phenomenon influencing economic trends, political agendas, media narratives, and technological developments. Hype creates momentum, attracts investment, and fuels speculation, while at the same timedistorting reality, misallocating resources, and amplifying uncertainties. What drives hype? Who benefits? How does it shape our reality? Members of SAIS contribute to Hype Studies, including through the work of co-founder Jascha Bareis, by analysing how hype around digital technologies and AI shapes public and expert debates and the ways digital futures and governance options are imagined.
